Delta-11 THC, also known as delta-11 or d11, is a hemp-derived cannabinoid that shares many similarities to THC. But what exactly is it, where does it come from, and how does it work? Check out our all-encompassing guide on delta-11 THC below to learn more.

What is d11 THC?

Delta-11 is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in hemp, though like other THC alternatives, it occurs in microscopic levels naturally, so it’s often synthesized from CBD through the process of isomerization.

It was first discovered in the 1970s and shares a lot of similarities with standard delta-9 THC in both structure and effects and may feel up to three times stronger than traditional delta-9.

Is delta-11 THC the same as 11-hydroxy THC?

Delta-11 THC is utterly different from 11-hydroxy THC. 11-hydroxy THC is a metabolite found in the liver, and it’s made when your body processes delta-9 THC edibles. Enzymes in your liver will break down the THC to make it bioavailable to your body, and in doing so, it changes its molecular structure. However, d11 is entirely different. Delta-11 THC is a phytocannabinoid, not a metabolite, for starters.

Delta-11 vs. The Rest of the Deltas

Delta-11 THC is similar to delta-9 THC, delta-8 THC, and delta-10 THC in terms of effects. The critical difference boils down to their molecular structure. The numbering on each form of THC is based on where a bond is placed on a carbon chain. Delta-9 THC has a bond on its 9th chain, while delta-8 has a bond on its 8th and delta-10 on its 10th.

With that said, d11 has a bond on its 11th carbon chain, which may make it easier for your body to process it. The positioning of this bond may make delta-11 THC up to three times stronger than delta-9 THC, five times stronger than delta-8 THC, and twice as potent as delta-10 THC.

However, as a version of THC, you can expect all of them to have similar effects. Each one just might feel more or less potent than delta-9 THC, which is the baseline.

Potential Benefits of Delta-11 THC

While we still have a lot to learn about d11, more research is being conducted daily. All we know for sure so far is that it offers a euphoric high and psychoactive effects similar to regular THC. When enjoying it as a vape cart or an edible, you might experience euphoria that feels up to three times stronger than regular THC. You might also experience a mental lift and physical relief in the form of a long-lasting high. A few potential benefits of d11 THC include:

  • Euphoria and bliss
  • Stress relief
  • Help with minor aches and pains
  • Balancing effects on fatigue or insomnia
  • Relief from nausea or a lack of appetite
  • And so on

Is d11 safe and legal?

While further study is still needed to determine the long-term safety and efficacy of delta-11 THC, it’s considered safe in the same way that THC is. However, side effects may include cottonmouth, dry eyes, anxiety, and paranoia. Taking too much will cause intense side effects. Considering that delta-11 is more potent than regular THC, we recommend starting with a tiny dose to see how it affects you before taking a standard serving.

It’s also important to remember that delta-11 THC, like other forms of THC, will cause you to fail a drug test. So if you have random screenings at work, it’s crucial to avoid delta-11 THC altogether.

As for legality, always double-check the laws in your area before enjoying delta-11 THC products. While no laws single out d11 specifically, some states have moved to ban THC alternatives because of their similarities to delta-9 THC. While hemp-derived cannabinoids are legal on a federal level, it’s essential to make sure that your state hasn’t made hemp-derived cannabinoids illegal before enjoying them.
